How Did We Get On TLC?

Since some of you may be visiting as a result of our going on TV, I thought I would discuss a topic that people ask us about alot. How did you get on TV to begin with? Like I said in an earlier post, we got on the show via Craigslist...

First lets discuss Craiglist. I view craigslist as one of the most valuable resources in our frugal arsenal. We use Craigslist for a wide variety of things. I will discuss a few of these below.

Finding Odd Jobs
Looking to make extra cash via a hobby or just some random gigs when you aren't working your regular job? Craigslist is great for this. Once my husband Orlando got a gig pressing T-Shirts at a college conference. It was an easy days work and he got paid on the spot, plus a free lunch. Not a bad deal if you ask me. You can also post ads to get people to hire you if you have anything to offer. I have seen everything from babysitting, to photography, to even local grass feed beef and veggies.

Getting Stuff Cheap
Going back to what I was just discussing in the previous paragraph, Craigslist is a great place to find stuff for cheap. Not just your ordinary used items but even new stuff and services. We didn't have the money to pay for a wedding photographer so we posted an ad on Craigslist to find a student who was just looking to build their portfolio and could do the wedding for free. We also hired some people to help us demo some stuff in our home when we were remodeling for much less than we would have paid professionals to do. I also bought alot of new baby stuff of craigslist that people simply didn't get a chance to use yet.

Getting Free Stuff
Craigslist has an entire free section that is ripe for the taking. My husband and I frequently check the site throughout the day to look for cool stuff that we can pickup for free. We once got a flat screen TV from Craigslist free and all it needed was one small piece replaced that had burned out.

Getting on TV
Most people don't think to look under Craiglist's Gigs because upon first glance, it is simply a bunch of perverts trying to take nude photos of women. But, alas, don't be fooled, Craigslist is a virtual treasure trove of casting information. I usually go to gigs and just type 'casting' in the search bar. From there you can just see all the films and TV casting opportunities in your area. There are also national searches for shows on daytime TV, such as talk shows. There are also legitimate modeling opportunities on Craigslist, you just have to look around and check places out before visiting.
